Biography:

 Shao-li Lu is the professor of history in National Taiwan University. He was the foreign researcher of Institute of Oriental Culture at the University of Tokyo in 2003, International Institute of Asian Studies at Leiden University in 2008, and the Kyoto University Museum in 2013. His main interest is on the history of Taiwan, socio-economic history of modern China and urban history of Taiwan. He published Whistle from the Sugarcane Factory: The Transition of Time Cognition and Rhythms of Social Life in Taiwan Under the Japanese Rule, 1895-1945 in 1998, and was translated into Japanese by The Interchange Association Japan in 2006. Another book, Exhibiting Taiwan: Power, Space, and Image Representation of Japanese Colonial Rule, put on sale at the same year, and became the shortlist of the 30rd. Golden Tripod Award. In the past decade, he pays his attention on the relationship between chemical industry, material culture, and the impact and transformation of everyday life within the Japanese Empire. The recent publication entitled “From insect to pest: pest and pest control in colonial Taiwan” and “Savage World, Immortal Island: The Colonial Gaze and Colonial Taste of the Penglai Rice,” are a pilot study of the aforementioned theme.
